Hatching new ideas

I have all sorts of things going on at the moment! I’m currently developing two business ideas which I hope will lead to the start of a new enterprise.

My background is as a merchandiser, and I stopped working full-time when I had my son (now four and a half). I used to sell pottery on a website, sell books for Usborne and now I direct sell for Phoenix cards. Not entrepreneurial I hear you cry? Well that brings in the money while I develop my business ideas …

I’ve lined up a meeting this week about the Acorn Programme at York St John to discuss my new business ideas. I plan to talk about two ideas and ask their advice on which I should pursue. I also have a session with a life coach next Tuesday, as whatever business I set up needs to fit around my children (I also have a little girl to consider - my new business will help me once she begins school in 18 months time, which is when I need to start earning some real money!)

Idea 1
A website called www.hensandchicks.co.uk (nothing to do with hen nights!). This is aimed at mums having a network of going out and socialising and doing things for themselves. It’s giving mothers ideas of interesting places to go and activities to get involved in; it’s all about doing something different, and where to find helpful contacts. There are loads of direct selling companies (think pamper parties, or chef parties where a dish of food is cooked for you) and I want to tap into them. Baby showers in the UK aren’t really developed yet and this is another area I want to give mothers ideas for. Quality downloads are key, too, as there are some terrible quality resources around. It would rely on advertisers and affiliates to make any money but I know the subject well enough.

Idea 2
A bit bigger than my first idea – I want to develop an agency which will offer useful services to people in my area. That is all I can reveal for the moment, but if it gets off the ground it could be something really successful.

My worry is always money – how much investment would I need in getting the right premises for my business? I also want to go along to a training course as it would help to get some more skills under my belt.

So by the end off the week I expect to have a clearer idea of how I should go about getting my ideas off the ground! I can then reveal more information about just what my big idea is. A very exciting time.
