Mothballing

To mothball a project is to defer it or shelve it indefinitely.

Mothballing can also refer to the process of storing machinery on a long-term basis.

Storing machinery on this basis means that it is kept in full working order and that production may be restored quickly if needed.

As a production strategy, mothballing has its advantages.

For companies with high operating costs, mothballing means that they are able to produce goods upon demand as opposed to continually churning out goods. This cuts the need to find a means of storing excess goods until they are needed.
