Onboarding
Onboarding is the term commonly used to describe the process of interviewing, hiring and successfully integrating new employees into an organisation.
The onboarding process is aimed at making new employees feel welcome and minimising the time it takes for these employees to become productive members of their team.
In other words, onboarding is the term used for getting new people ‘on board’ and contributing effectively to a company’s success as soon as possible.
Common practice dictates that an onboarding programme should be fun and interesting and that it should provide the prospective employees with certain vital information about the company.
For example, the programme might include a general overview of the company or department (ie, the mission/vision statement), a specific outline of the job expectations and the company’s policies and procedures.
Such information is necessary for the new employee to be able to recognise his/her role in contributing to the company’s success, to have a clear understanding of the tasks he/she should carry out and to be aware of his/her rights as an employee of that company.
